White Horse Temple

The White Horse Temple is located in the east of Luoyang City, Henan Province, China. In traditional saying, it is the first official Buddhist temple in China. Established in 68 A.D., the temple is considered by most believers as "the cradle of Chinese Buddhism".

The temple faces south and the main buildings were constructed along the central axis, including five grand halls, four large courtyards and east and west wing-rooms. Covering an area of about 40,000 square meters, the temple also has numerous halls divided by courtyards and manicured gardens.

The White Horse Temple has a collection of significant statues, include Sakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya, Jade Buddha, saint figures such as Guru Avalokitesvara, Amitabha and arhats. The stone statues of two white horses were created in honor of the horses which brought the Indian monks to China.
