Wide and Narrow Alleys

The Wide and Narrow Alleys is located at the west end of the Sudu Avenue in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, and is about 500 meters in length. It is a series of streets with unique features of old Chengdu houses. The Wide and Narrow Alleys is a relatively large-scale ancient street left over from Qing Dynasty. Together with Daci Temple and Wenshu Monastery, it is also known as the three major historical and cultural street in Chengdu. It consists of three lanes of alleys arranged in parallel, that is the Wide Alley, Narrow Alley and Well Alley, as well as the surrounding streets and the quadrangle dwellings.

The Wide and Narrow Alleys is a complex cultural and commercial street with distinctive regional characteristics and strong cultural atmosphere. After the renovation in 2008, the functions of the alleys are transformed from living to culture, commerce, and tourism. Some areas are set up to display ancient arts and cultures that have long been lost or are about to be lost, such as embroidery, brocade, bamboo weaving and lacquer crafts. Some unique memorial halls, old painting halls, cultural halls, teahouses and theaters have also been built.

The culture of Wide and Narrow Alleys is divided into three themes. The Wide Alley is the "leisure life" area - the alley has concentrated the most complete old buildings including more than 20 characteristic courtyards, and most of them are preserved the old frontispiece and are full of nostalgic atmosphere. You can enjoy a bowl of tea and eat authentic Sichuan cuisine to experience the customs of old Chengdu. The Narrow Alley is the "slow life" area – the alley has both the Chinese-styled and Western-styled buildings. Here you can enjoy western cuisine, coffee and clubs which becomes the main components of modern Chengdu's leisure lifestyle. The Well Alley is the "new life" area - it is a typical miniature of folk customs in Chengdu. Besides of the intriguing Brick Culture Wall, it also gathers Chengdu special snacks and folk customs, demonstrating the unique flavor of authentic old Chengdu.
